About Me

I am terrible at introductions.

This is a blog about me. The real me. It’s about my experiences moving to a new town where I knew no one, to a new job that pays next to nothing and trying to figure out the world from that point forward.

My story:
See, I graduated from college and had no idea what I wanted. I had this panicked identity crisis. What the hell did I go to college for if I wasn’t going to be able to get a job and what was all that stuff Tiny Liberal Arts School said about real world prep and graduates with futures? Where was that? Did I miss that class?

I spent the summer fervently looking for jobs and after several hundred a few unsuccessful interviews I decided to take a different course.

In August of 2007 I was accepted into a volunteer service program that would take me to Alaska to live and work for a year. I spent three months planning, packing and saying goodbye, and then shipped off. I left the family, the friends, and the boy at home. In an effort to keep in touch I started this blog.

Since moving up here I have experienced my first Christmas without my family, seen the Northern Lights, danced on tables, made friends, lost friends, learned that you really can find anything on craigslist, biked more than 1,000 miles, seen wildlife both up close and far away (including bears!), and generally had the time of my life.

What you should know:
It’s filtered. Not very much, and I don’t lie. I just omit various details. Why? For one because there is at least one 10 11 year-old that knows about it, and two, my parents read this (hi mom and dad!) and there’s just some stuff they don’t need to know. I’m 22 23, I have fun. If you feel somehow out of the loop (or just want to chat) email me and ask. I’ll tell you, I promise.

  1. HI! I’m a recent Elon graduate and I’m serving with Americorps for a year as well in Denver. I would LOVE to keep a blog like you are doing and I was wondering how you got Elon to (for lack of a better word) advertise your blog on their site?
    Thanks!
